US company invents mineral water bottles made from corn

Husky, a pre-production equipment supplier, has used NatureWorks PLA corn resin with Biota brand Cargill Dow and SIG to develop a synthetic water bottle for mineral water. It can be used with municipal and industrial equipment. Mike Urquhart, Husky’s Vice President, said: “We believe that the water bottle developed jointly with other companies is a breakthrough in application and is the best example of the possibility of combining commercial applications with environmental stability.”

The concept of NatureWorks is very simple. Carbon is extracted from corn, and extracted from the air during photosynthesis, and then stored in corn starch. This is done by breaking the starch into natural plant sugar. The carbon and other components of these natural sugars are then used to make plastic polylactide (PLA) through simple fermentation, separation and polymerization processes, so the packaging produced with it is 100% natural.
