The Human Media Laboratory of Queen ’s University in Canada has recently developed a prototype device for a “paper phone†that is as thick as paper. At present, there are not many functions of the prototype device, including only functions such as telephone, music player, e-book and map.
According to a Canadian news agency, the device resembles a flexible iPhone made of plastic film. The shape and size of the prototype device is a 9.5 cm diagonal rectangle, and its electronic devices are integrated in a very thin and flexible plastic film. Its screen is black and white, similar to the e-book readers currently on the market. At present, the prototype device accepts user instructions neither by using buttons nor a touch screen, but by the user issuing commands in various ways, such as bending its corners and bending its edges back and forth. At the same time, users can also use special pens to write instructions on the screen.
The main inventor of the device, Lor Wiltega, said that as technology advances and costs decrease, high-resolution color screens and touch screen technologies that can play videos can be applied. He believes that the technology will be an epoch-making advancement and may replace the current computer, but it still needs at least five years to be put on the market. Wiltega also said that although the current cost of the prototype device is 7,000 Canadian dollars, the cost will be greatly reduced in the future after mass production.
Because the price of the final marketed product is not expensive, users can have "paper telephone" devices of different sizes at the same time. Large ones can reach the size of a desktop, and can be placed on the table when folded up or in a bag. Users can choose to use one plastic film, or use multiple plastic films for different tasks. Scientists expect that the device will eventually fold up and people can carry it around.
