Flame-retardant polyolefin nanocomposites for cables

Kabelwerk Eupen, Germany, is now able to provide flame retardant polyolefin nanocomposites for the cable industry.
According to Kabelwerk Eupen, this nanocomposite contains only a small amount of modified layered nano-silicate particles. Its flame-retardant mechanism is related to the formation of char during combustion. Charcoal can cut off the contact between the underlying polymer and the heat source and prevent the formation of volatiles. Disperses volatiles outwards.
Flame-retardant polymer nanocomposites have many advantages over traditional flame-retardant materials. A small amount of nano-particles can improve the flame retardancy of the polymer and have little effect on the mechanical properties of the polymer. The company also cooperates with Sud Chemical Co. to produce nanoparticles and hydrogen. Alumina (ATH) was used in combination to increase the flame retardancy of the material. The results show that the combined effect is significantly better than that of ATH alone, and the amount of ATH is greatly reduced.
