Britain replaces Japan as China's second largest research partner

A new research report says that the UK has replaced Japan as China's second largest research partner.

According to a report released by the British Innovation Foundation (Nesta), the British Research Council and the British government, the UK should be more active in strengthening its research and development cooperation strategy with China.

The United States is currently the country that has published the most research articles in cooperation with China, followed by the United Kingdom.

One of the authors of the report and the head of the International Science and Technology Innovation Department of the Innovation Foundation, Kristin Bainde, said that "(China's) innovation system is developing rapidly, reflecting strong and inclusive characteristics, absorbing foreign technology and knowledge and strengthening domestic research Capacity has promoted China's rapid development.

Britain replaced Japan in 2011 and became China's second largest technology partner. At present, the total value of Sino-British joint research projects has reached 47 million pounds.

She said: "The UK needs to adopt a more active strategy and seize the opportunity to strengthen the academic, research and commercial links between the UK and China."

She added: "Now for the UK, the question is not whether the UK should strengthen its links with China's innovation system, but how to do it."

Speed and quality

The report found that China now accounts for 13% of the world's scientific research output, while China accounts for 25% of the global R & D power.

This report comes at a time when the British Chancellor of the Exchequer Osborne and the Secretary of State for Higher Education and Science and Technology Willitz visited China.

The United Kingdom and China have the same investment in basic research, but China's investment in innovation and development is equivalent to six times that of the United Kingdom.

The report said that although the growth of China ’s research quality is not as fast as its investment rate, Chinese leaders pay more attention to the quality, efficiency and evaluation of research.

Willitz recently met with Cao Jianlin, vice minister of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. Both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral innovation cooperation. Willetz announced three UK-China joint research funding projects with a total research funding of over £ 7 million.
