The representative of Guangzuo mahogany furniture. Born in Guangzhou, he became a master of Suzuo's mahogany production. He studied art in Hong Kong and has been engaged in the production management of mahogany furniture for more than 40 years. He has made the mahogany furniture culture of Su Zuo, Guang Zuo, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore compatible and integrated. Ergonomics is used in the improvement and innovation of mahogany furniture. It is the inheritor of traditional mahogany furniture culture and the pioneer of modern mahogany furniture design.

Information Times: What is the most influential thing in the Hong Kong Arts and Crafts Year and the biggest impact on the future? What is your biggest sentiment about Ming and Qing mahogany furniture?
He Jianwei: In the ten years of apprenticeship in Hong Kong, what impressed me the most is four words: wood is like life. In the first year of coming to Hong Kong, a foreign customer’s incredible inspection method has made me so impressed. At that time, I went to Repulse Bay to give a foreigner a set of Burmese rosewood coffee table. He asked us whether it was rubbing paint or chemical paint? I replied that it was rubbed with lacquer. Who knows that he lightly ignited a Marlboro cigarette and placed it directly on the coffee table. I was stunned by the whole person. This kind of inspection master never told me that I hurriedly took the cloth. Wipe, the result is no trace of the countertop. After returning, the master told me that the first inspection is to see if the raw lacquer is used (the traditional craftsmanship necessary in the mahogany furniture production process, which plays a key role in the subsequent protection of the mahogany furniture, making the furniture more and more slippery and beautiful) Secondly, it is not a rosewood. If it is a fir or a mixed wood, it will leave a mark.
Tell you a story about the material selection. The master has been telling us about the difference in wood texture. Two mahogany of the same wood type will have different attributes. Once, the master arranged for me to send a Burmese rosewood bed to a Shanghai woman. When I put the bed, I found that it was a bit unstable. Going back, I wondered why the master would be like this? He told me with certainty: "The beam on the side of the bed has not been selected for straight grain, and the material has become straight." I don't believe it. I ran back and saw it. It was. The master told me that the selection and opening of mahogany are very particular. The wood with different textures and different attributes can determine which kind of furniture it is suitable for, what kind of parts it is suitable for, and make the best use of it.
Information Times: The knowledge of mahogany inspection and wood material selection makes you remember, so what are the craftsmanship of mahogany furniture that you will never forget? Which style of furniture is the most difficult to make?
He Jianwei: Just as stereo is always more complicated than plane, I think the most difficult thing in mahogany making process is embossing: original billet, pattern roughing, contour decoration, fine shovel carving, grinding treatment... To actually sculpt a thing that was originally on the plane is very three-dimensional, very spiritual, and leaping on paper, which requires more complicated processes and savvy. Nowadays, many carvings of mahogany furniture are replaced by machines, and our era is purely hand-carved, such as carving a character, first hitting the blank, then try carving, then grinding, carving the lines, and finally carving the details of the facial features.
When it comes to the difficulty of making different styles of furniture, just like egg fried rice, the simplest is the most difficult. For example, the four-headed official hat chair and the Ming-style circle chair, this kind of furniture with simple lines is actually the most difficult to do. He Jianwei: In 1983, I learned from Hong Kong and returned to Shenzhen Guanlan, focusing on the production design and management of the new factory. Our products are mainly exported to Singapore. They were sold to Taiwan in the early 1990s and turned to the mainland market in 2000. During this period, we introduced Taiwan's advanced ergonomics into the design of Guangzuo mahogany furniture. Taiwan's mature mahogany furniture mechanization technology also benefited us a lot.
What is the integration of ergonomics? For example, the back of the previous mahogany sofa is straight, only has a simple sitting function, and the comfort is relatively poor. After comprehending Taiwan's ergonomics, we made the sofa and the Dining Chair into a curved back, which made the comfort of the European sofa and the texture of the red wood perfectly combined. He Jianwei: The ancients said that jade has six virtues, which is like a gentleman's benevolence, thickness, courtesy, righteousness, wisdom, and faith. The mahogany is as moist as jade. I think that the essence of the mahogany culture is as thick and simple as the scorpion. For more than 40 years in the history of mahogany, my biggest wish is to pass on the traditional mahogany craftsmanship. This is also a common problem encountered in traditional Chinese culture and traditional crafts. I really want to run a school and share traditional craftsmanship and experience with young people who are interested in entering this business.
Nowadays, young people like to play with their mobile phones because they meet the psychological needs of their social and entertainment. We have to find ways to use cultural power to induce them to be interested in this industry.
